Real Madrid is contemplating an unexpected transfer for a Manchester United player as a replacement for Alaba.

Real Madrid faces a defensive crisis as David Alaba suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear, necessitating an extended recovery period. With Eder Militao also sidelined with a long-term injury, Real Madrid finds themselves with only two healthy center-backs, Nacho and Antonio Rudiger.

This predicament has prompted speculation about a potential move for Manchester United’s Raphael Varane to reinforce the backline.

Reports from BILD journalist Christian Falk indicate that Varane is on Real Madrid’s shortlist as they explore options to address the void left by Alaba’s injury. Manager Carlo Ancelotti has acknowledged the need to assess possibilities in the January transfer window.

Varane, however, has faced challenges at Manchester United this season, with injuries and inconsistent form limiting his playing time. Furthermore, the 30-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign, introducing uncertainty about his future at Old Trafford.

United has the option to extend Varane’s contract for an additional season, a move widely anticipated. However, starting in January, Varane is free to enter into pre-contract negotiations with European clubs, pending approval from Manchester United.

Despite Ajax manager Erik ten Hag expressing a desire to retain Varane until the summer, the possibility of a mid-season departure is not ruled out. United may consider allowing the French defender to leave if a suitable replacement can be secured, even though financial constraints might limit their transfer activity.

Varane recently made his Premier League debut in United’s goalless draw against Liverpool, following a period on the sidelines. While Ten Hag was compelled to substitute Varane for Harry Maguire due to an injury, the World Cup winner made a notable impact in his return to league action at Anfield.

United’s stance on Varane’s departure mid-season appears contingent on receiving an offer that aligns with their expectations and provides the financial means to secure a replacement.

Real Madrid, facing defensive challenges, may prefer a short-term solution to address immediate injury concerns before contemplating a more substantial signing in the summer.

Varane’s potential move in the upcoming transfer window may hinge on various factors, including the player’s willingness to push for a transfer and the financial considerations that both Manchester United and Real Madrid must navigate.

The intricacies of mid-season transfers, coupled with the need for effective replacements, add layers of complexity to the evolving situation surrounding Raphael Varane’s future in the months ahead.
