In the wake of a significant knee injury to David Alaba, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly urging the club to consider re-signing a surprising Manchester United defender.

Real Madrid, facing a defensive crisis due to injuries, is reportedly considering a reunion with French center-back Raphael Varane in the upcoming January transfer window.

The defensive injury woes, with Eder Militao and David Alaba both sidelined with ACL injuries, leave Antonio Rudiger and Nacho Fernandez as the only fit center-back options for Los Blancos.

Initially reluctant to delve into the January transfer market, Real Madrid has shifted its stance under the pressing influence of manager Carlo Ancelotti, who is keen on reinforcing the defensive line. With Aurelien Tchouameni able to serve as a makeshift center-back, the club is exploring potential alternatives, with Varane emerging as a viable option.

Varane, who spent ten successful years at the Bernabeu from 2011 to 2021, winning numerous trophies, including four Champions League titles, joined Manchester United for €40 million in 2021. Despite his experience and accolades, Varane has faced challenges settling into English football, encountering various injury problems.

The French international found himself out of favor under manager Erik ten Hag for an extended period but recently regained prominence due to injuries to Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire. His standout performance against Liverpool showcased his world-class abilities, making 15 clearances and winning 100 percent of his aerial duels.

Ancelotti’s openness to bringing Varane back to Real Madrid is rooted in the need for a player who can seamlessly fit into his system, and Varane aligns with the desired profile.

Transfermarkt values Varane at €25 million, and his contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer of 2024, with United holding an option for an extra 12 months. The potential winter sale would make financial sense for United if they don’t plan to extend Varane’s contract beyond 2025.

While Varane’s return to Real Madrid is contingent on various factors, including United’s willingness to let him go, Ten Hag’s demand for a suitable replacement, and Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo emerging as a primary defensive target, the potential reunion underscores the dynamic nature of the January transfer window and the strategic considerations facing both clubs.

As Real Madrid navigates its defensive challenges, the pursuit of Varane adds an intriguing subplot to the upcoming transfer window.
