A top-four English manager faced dismissal today following a disheartening Premier League defeat.

Salford City has terminated the contract of manager Neil Wood following their 5-1 defeat against Tranmere, which intensified concerns about relegation.

Owned by Manchester United’s Class of ’92, Salford City faced a challenging season, losing 16 games since its commencement. Despite leading the team to the League Two Playoffs the previous season, Wood’s tenure was marred by their precarious position near relegation.

The official club statement expressed appreciation for Wood’s efforts over the past 18 months, acknowledging his role in achieving the club’s best-ever finish in Sky Bet League Two the previous season. Wood’s departure was confirmed, and the club extended good wishes for his future endeavors in football.

Assistant Coach Simon Wiles will take charge of the team’s preparations for the upcoming match against Grimsby Town, handling managerial duties temporarily while the club initiates the search for a new manager.

Neil Wood, who previously managed the Manchester United U23 squad, had a history with Manchester United’s academy during his playing career.

Despite never being called up to the main squad, Wood’s coaching journey led him to become Salford’s manager in May 2022. Overseeing 88 games during his tenure, Wood faced challenges this season that ultimately led to his departure.

With legends of Manchester United among the club’s owners, including Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, and Gary Neville, Salford City aims to navigate through this managerial transition and address their relegation concerns as they prepare for upcoming fixtures under temporary leadership.
