Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, a long-time target for Chelsea and reportedly linked with Manchester United, inked a fresh contract with Napoli just two days before Christmas. This extended deal, effective until 2026, not only brought about a salary increase but also introduced a release clause set at a minimum of €120 million (£103 million).
Despite committing to Napoli in the short term, the 25-year-old Nigerian striker has hinted at an imminent departure, disclosing, “I have already made my decision on the next step to do at the end of the season.” Osimhen, currently on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, affirmed that he has a clear plan for the future and wishes to conclude the season strongly with Napoli before revealing his decision.
Acknowledging the widespread speculation linking him with the Premier League, Osimhen acknowledged the allure of one of the world’s premier football leagues.
He emphasized that the Premier League holds considerable interest, with 60% of the discussions surrounding his potential move revolving around this prestigious competition.
Having established himself as one of Europe’s most lethal strikers, Osimhen’s goal tally of 31 in all competitions during the 2022/23 season underscores his prolific scoring prowess. However, injuries and suspensions in the current season have somewhat limited his playing time.
Contrary to potential moves to the Saudi Pro League, which he previously hinted as unappealing, Osimhen’s focus remains on top-tier European football. Napoli had reportedly rejected substantial bids from Al Hilal in July, reflecting the club’s determination to retain their prolific striker.
Recently, Osimhen vehemently responded to claims made by a teammate’s agent, suggesting a possible transfer to Saudi Arabia in the upcoming summer. He labeled the agent as a “piece of filth and a disgrace” in a social media post, firmly asserting that he would not consider such a move, even for a substantial sum.
While Chelsea and Manchester United maintain their reported interest in Osimhen, Real Madrid is also linked to the striker. However, the transfer speculation surrounding the Spanish giants seems to lean more towards Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland at this juncture.
As Victor Osimhen navigates international duties and prepares for the culmination of Napoli’s season, the football world awaits the unveiling of his decisive next step, adding another layer of anticipation to the evolving narrative of this sought-after striker.
