A former Premier League star suggests that Liverpool could encounter competition in their pursuit of Xabi Alonso as their next manager.

Liverpool Football Club finds itself at a pivotal juncture as it embarks on the task of identifying a suitable successor to Jurgen Klopp, as reported by sources close to the club.

Klopp’s announcement in late January regarding his impending departure from Liverpool at the end of the season sent shockwaves throughout the footballing world, prompting the club to initiate preparations for the transition.

In the wake of Klopp’s announcement, Liverpool has wasted no time in compiling a list of potential candidates for the managerial role.

The club’s immediate focus lies not only on finding Klopp’s replacement but also on addressing the vacant sporting director position. Liverpool’s strategy entails prioritizing the appointment of a sporting director before finalizing the selection of a new manager.

Despite Klopp privately communicating his decision to leave as far back as November, the club has had ample time—two months—to conduct thorough research and evaluation of potential candidates for the managerial position.

Sources privy to the club’s proceedings have disclosed to 90min that Bayer Leverkusen’s current manager, Xabi Alonso, emerges as an early frontrunner. Nevertheless, Alonso’s appointment is contingent upon the resolution of the sporting director search.

Alonso, although keen on a return to Liverpool in a managerial capacity, remains fully committed to leading Bayer Leverkusen’s charge in their pursuit of Bundesliga glory.

His candidacy, however, faces competition from other suitors, including Real Madrid and potentially Bayern Munich, who also covet Alonso’s managerial prowess.

In addition to Alonso, other serious contenders for the Liverpool managerial role include Brighton & Hove Albion’s Roberto De Zerbi, Germany national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, and Tottenham Hotspur’s Ange Postecoglou.

Despite Tottenham’s confidence in retaining Postecoglou, Liverpool views him as a viable option.

Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim garners admiration from Liverpool, yet concerns persist regarding his limited experience in top-five European leagues. Similarly, Aston Villa’s Unai Emery and Benfica’s Roger Schmidt have garnered internal consideration from Liverpool’s decision-makers.

While speculation had previously linked club legend Steven Gerrard with a potential return to Anfield in a managerial capacity, his current tenure at Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq rules him out of contention.

Nevertheless, Liverpool remains open to extending Gerrard an interview out of respect should he express interest.

As Liverpool navigates the intricate process of succession planning, the club remains steadfast in its pursuit of identifying a candidate who can uphold the values and standards set forth by Jurgen Klopp, ensuring a seamless transition and sustained success for the club’s future endeavors.
