Manchester United is allegedly facing internal discord as certain players express reservations about the possible reintroduction of Mason Greenwood to the team, fearing potential disruptions to their season.
Greenwood, who was recently cleared of charges including attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior, had been arrested in January of the previous year following the emergence of troubling videos and images online.
Although the Crown Prosecution Service opted to drop the charges, The Sun reports that some members of the United squad harbor concerns about Greenwood’s comeback, citing worries about the potential distractions and scrutiny it could entail.
According to a source, “While the players are open to the idea of him rejoining the team, the intense scrutiny could prove to be a significant distraction.
The atmosphere in the dressing room is currently the most positive it has been in quite some time, and nobody wants to jeopardize that.”
In response to the CPS’s decision, Manchester United issued a statement acknowledging the dropped charges and affirmed that the club would conduct its own internal review before making any decisions regarding Greenwood’s future involvement.
The statement underscored the club’s dedication to conducting a thorough internal examination of the matter.
Meanwhile, under the leadership of Erik ten Hag, the team has been enjoying a successful streak in both the Premier League and the Carabao Cup.
Currently positioned third in the league standings following a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over Crystal Palace, United has also secured a spot in the Carabao Cup final.
They are slated to face Newcastle at Wembley Stadium at the conclusion of the month.
The reported unrest among the squad members introduces an added layer of complexity to United’s season, as players weigh the potential ramifications of Greenwood’s return on team cohesion.
The club’s statement underscores the cautious approach they are taking in addressing the situation internally before making any further determinations regarding Greenwood’s role within the team.
