Nico Williams is expected to be one of the most sought-after players in this summer’s transfer window. However, convincing him to leave Athletic Bilbao before the 2024/25 season might prove to be a difficult task.

The 21-year-old recently conveyed his contentment at Bilbao, where he has signed a new contract that extends his stay until 2027.

Williams had an impressive season, contributing 27 goals in 37 games, which significantly helped Athletic Bilbao secure fifth place in La Liga and qualify for European football. His performances have naturally attracted attention from several top clubs looking to strengthen their squads.

Despite this interest, Liverpool is reportedly not expected to pursue Williams. According to James Pearce of The Athletic, Liverpool feels they are already well-covered in the left-wing position.

The club currently has Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, and Cody Gakpo, all of whom provide strong options for that role.

Liverpool’s management believes these players offer sufficient depth and quality, reducing the necessity to chase after Williams.

Luis Diaz, in particular, remains a key part of Liverpool’s plans despite notable interest from major clubs like Barcelona and PSG. The club is intent on keeping Diaz, viewing him as an integral part of their attacking lineup. This decision further underscores their confidence in their existing squad depth and their reluctance to enter the fray for Williams.

While Williams’ talent and impressive statistics make him an attractive prospect, Liverpool’s current roster dynamics and strategic decisions indicate that they do not see him as a priority target.

This approach also reflects their broader transfer strategy, which focuses on strengthening areas of immediate need rather than adding surplus in positions where they already have substantial quality.

For Athletic Bilbao, retaining Williams is a significant boost. His recent contract extension until 2027 not only reflects his loyalty and satisfaction with the club but also provides Bilbao with a level of security regarding his future. Williams’ contributions last season were pivotal, and his continued presence will be crucial as they aim to build on their successes and compete in European competitions.

Other top clubs might still attempt to lure Williams away, given his remarkable potential and recent performances. However, his contentment at Bilbao and the club’s determination to keep him might make such efforts challenging.

Athletic Bilbao’s ability to secure his services for the long term demonstrates their commitment to maintaining a competitive squad capable of achieving high results domestically and in Europe.
