Manchester City star Julian Alvarez is set to become the most disliked player among City fans after signing a five-year contract with a surprising La Liga rival club.

Julian Alvarez’s replacement by a new signing this month is not a certainty, given Manchester City’s squad has several internal candidates ready to step up.

Among these options, Oscar Bobb stands out as the most apparent choice following his impressive performance during the club’s pre-season tour in the United States. Since turning 21 in mid-July, the

Norway international has been in fine form, scoring two goals and assisting three others across City’s four high-scoring friendlies. Bobb’s standout displays have significantly boosted his chances of playing a more prominent role this season, particularly in Alvarez’s absence.

Bobb’s potential promotion is not the only exciting prospect within the squad. James McAtee has also made a strong case for himself, having scored in the match against AC Milan and provided two assists against Chelsea.

Similarly, Nico O’Reilly seized his opportunities in the other pre-season games, setting up Bobb’s opener against Celtic and finding the net himself in the game against Barcelona. The expectation is that both McAtee and O’Reilly will remain with the first-team squad this season, given their promising performances.

Additionally, there is anticipation that Phil Foden will play a more central role this campaign compared to last term, providing another versatile option for Pep Guardiola. The squad’s depth is further strengthened by the signings City has already made.

Savinho, for instance, is expected to make a positive impression against Manchester United in the Community Shield. Claudio Echeverri, set to join in January after completing his loan spell at River Plate, also adds to the future potential of the team.

Pep Guardiola has acknowledged that the club would consider new additions if a player were to leave, but identifying the right talent before the end of the transfer window is a complex task.

Therefore, it is unlikely that the initial £64 million fee from player sales, including those of Sergio Gomez, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Tommy Doyle, and Yan Couto, will result in several new signings. Guardiola has made it clear that the squad will largely resemble the one from last season.

City’s approach this summer appears to be one of cautious evaluation rather than aggressive spending. Guardiola’s emphasis on promoting from within and giving young players like Bobb, McAtee, and O’Reilly a chance to shine reflects a strategic decision to build on the existing squad’s strengths.

This method not only fosters a competitive environment but also ensures that players are ready to step up when needed, reducing the immediate need for external reinforcements.

Moreover, the integration of new signings such as Savinho and the future addition of Echeverri highlight City’s long-term planning. By blending experienced players with promising talent, Guardiola aims to maintain a balanced and dynamic squad capable of competing at the highest levels.

The manager’s confidence in his current squad and his measured approach to potential new signings indicate a focus on stability and gradual improvement rather than drastic changes.
