Manchester City identify six right-back targets for summer

Manchester City are reportedly exploring several right-back options ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window, with interest in up to six potential signings now being reported by Brazilian media sources.

This move comes amid expectations of significant changes at the Etihad Stadium following a challenging 2024/25 season, in which the team has underperformed across multiple competitions due to a combination of injuries and general fitness issues.

One of the most notable shifts will occur in the club’s recruitment department. Long-time director of football Txiki Begiristain is set to depart, with former Sporting CP executive Hugo Viana taking over the key role.

Viana has already been involved with Manchester City’s scouting and recruitment plans since the January transfer window, helping the club bring in youthful talent to freshen up Pep Guardiola’s aging squad.

One of the standout additions during that period was Vitor Reis, a highly-rated young Brazilian defender signed from Palmeiras, who has already made his debut in the FA Cup against Leyton Orient.

City’s focus on the South American market appears to be continuing, as new reports from Gianluca Di Marzio suggest that the club is “pushing” to sign Wesley, a 21-year-old right-back currently playing for Flamengo.

The Brazilian is seen as one of the most promising talents in his position and is attracting interest from several European clubs. Despite the competition, Manchester City are believed to be particularly keen on Wesley and are aiming to finalize a deal before this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup.

According to the report, City would currently prefer Wesley over Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento, although the Brazilian is listed as fourth among six identified right-back targets. This means that the club may first attempt to secure deals with the other three preferred options before making a serious push for Wesley.

A prior report from Coluna Do Fla also confirmed Manchester City’s admiration for Wesley, but clarified that no formal offer has been submitted to Flamengo yet. Regardless, the growing interest reflects the club’s intention to rejuvenate the squad, especially in the right-back position.

Kyle Walker, who moved to AC Milan on a six-month loan in January, is expected to make his exit permanent this summer. He is said to be enjoying life in Italy and is unlikely to return to Guardiola’s plans for the next campaign.

In his absence, Pep Guardiola has rotated between Rico Lewis and Matheus Nunes at right-back, although Lewis is increasingly being viewed as a potential attacking midfielder in the long term, especially after his impressive display in the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest.

Overall, the coming months could bring sweeping changes to Manchester City’s squad, particularly in defense, as the club sets its sights on younger talents to refresh the team and prepare for future success.
