Reports are circulating that Bruno Fernandes has urged INEOS and the board of Manchester United to bring back a former Old Trafford star

Manchester United FC’s dramatic 2–1 victory over Crystal Palace FC may have generated excitement among supporters, but behind closed doors the conversation has reportedly shifted toward something much bigger — the club’s long-term pursuit of sustained success.

While the team’s rise to third place under the guidance of Michael Carrick has fueled optimism, captain Bruno Fernandes is believed to feel that one critical piece is still missing from the squad.

According to reports, Fernandes has expressed his concerns directly to the INEOS leadership group, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Despite the positive momentum surrounding the club, the Portuguese midfielder reportedly believes that United remain just one elite addition short of becoming genuine title contenders.

While the team has shown improved structure, balance, and resilience, Fernandes is said to think that reinforcing the midfield could be the defining step toward dominance.

In particular, he is rumored to have advocated for the return of former United midfielder Scott McTominay, who is currently thriving at SSC Napoli.

Since making the move to Italy, McTominay has reportedly taken his performances to another level, contributing 23 goals in 70 appearances and earning recognition as one of Serie A’s most effective box-to-box midfielders.

His blend of energy, physical strength, tactical discipline, and attacking output has made him a standout figure.

Fernandes is believed to admire not only McTominay’s statistical contributions but also his intangible qualities — leadership, work rate, and a deep-rooted understanding of Manchester United’s culture and expectations.

With uncertainty surrounding the future of Casemiro, who is expected to depart, Fernandes reportedly sees McTominay as a natural solution capable of restoring balance and adding steel to the midfield core.

However, securing such a move would not be straightforward. Napoli are unlikely to part ways with a key performer cheaply, and reports suggest a transfer fee exceeding £60 million could be required. For INEOS, this presents a complex decision.

On one hand, there is the need to maintain financial discipline and adhere to long-term sustainability plans.

On the other, satisfying the vision of their captain — a central figure in the club’s resurgence — could reinforce belief both inside and outside the dressing room.

Complicating matters further is reported interest in Fernandes himself from overseas clubs, adding another layer of strategic consideration. Balancing investment, squad stability, and ambition will require careful planning.

Ultimately, while United’s recent victory signals progress, it also underscores a broader truth: building a championship-caliber team demands precision.

If Fernandes’ assessment is correct, one decisive addition could transform optimism into genuine title contention.
