Liverpool took to the pitch at Anfield tonight hoping to turn things around against Paris Saint-Germain in their UEFA Champions League clash. The home side started the match on a fairly positive note, showing some composure in possession and attempting to push forward early on. However, despite their efforts, they were unable to break the deadlock before the interval, heading into half-time with the score still at 0-0.
The second half, however, told a different story. Arne Slot’s men struggled to maintain control as the game progressed, and their resistance was finally broken in the 72nd minute. Ousmane Dembélé stepped up for the visitors, finding the back of the net with a clinical finish to give PSG the lead. As Liverpool tried to respond, they left spaces at the back, and Dembélé punished them once again deep into stoppage time, sealing a 2-0 win on the night and a comprehensive 4-0 aggregate triumph for the French side.
Looking at individual performances, Giorgi Mamardashvili had a decent outing in goal, earning a 6/10 rating. He made a number of important saves throughout the match and could hardly be blamed for either of the goals he conceded. At right-back, Jeremie Frimpong also received a 6/10, as he struggled with consistency, occasionally giving away possession cheaply and failing to make a significant impact in attack.
In central defence, Ibrahima Konaté delivered a relatively solid performance for much of the game, earning a 6.5/10. However, he appeared less assured as the match wore on. Alongside him, Virgil van Dijk had a difficult evening, also rated 6/10, as he found it challenging to contain Dembélé and lacked his usual sharpness in advanced situations.
On the left side of defence, Milos Kerkez stood out more positively with a 7/10 performance. He showed determination when pressing opponents and contributed with energy in forward areas, making him one of Liverpool’s brighter players.
In midfield, Ryan Gravenberch earned a 6.5/10 for his driving runs and willingness to carry the ball forward, although his finishing let him down. Alexis Mac Allister, rated 6/10, kept the ball moving well but was guilty of going down too easily in the penalty area. Dominik Szoboszlai matched Gravenberch’s 6.5/10 rating, bringing energy and work rate but lacking precision, particularly with his crosses.
Further forward, Florian Wirtz showed glimpses of quality and gradually grew into the game, earning a 6.5/10, though he never truly threatened to score. Up front, Alexander Isak had a quiet outing and was substituted at half-time after struggling to get involved, receiving a 6/10.
Hugo Ekitiké started brightly and looked promising early on, earning a 6.5/10, but his night was cut short due to injury in the 30th minute. Mohamed Salah came on and created a few chances, finishing with a 6.5/10, though he couldn’t find the net.
Among the substitutes, Joe Gomez showed strength on the ball but missed a good scoring opportunity, ending with a 6/10 rating. Cody Gakpo struggled to make a meaningful impact and was also rated 6/10. Meanwhile, Rio Ngumoha had limited influence during his time on the pitch, receiving a similar 6/10 score.
Overall, it was a disappointing night for Liverpool, as they failed to capitalize on their home advantage and were ultimately outclassed by a more clinical PSG side.
