Liverpool ‘prepared’ to break transfer record for Mo Salah replacement

Liverpool are reportedly moving aggressively in the transfer market as the club prepares for what could become a major new era at Anfield following the dismissal of Arne Slot. According to recent reports, sporting director Richard Hughes is now working urgently behind the scenes to complete a deal for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande before the start of the 2026 World Cup finals this summer.

The growing speculation comes shortly after Fenway Sports Group reportedly decided to sack Slot following a disappointing period at the club. Attention has now quickly shifted toward identifying his successor, and Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is increasingly viewed as the overwhelming favourite to take charge at Liverpool.

Reports suggest Iraola is now extremely close to becoming the next Liverpool manager after allegedly turning down interest from both Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen. The Spaniard is believed to have prioritized the possibility of managing Liverpool above all other opportunities, with several sources claiming he has effectively decided to move to Anfield this summer.

As Liverpool move toward finalizing their managerial situation, recruitment plans are also accelerating rapidly. According to TEAMtalk, Richard Hughes is determined to ensure Yan Diomande becomes one of the first major signings of the new era under Iraola.

The report claims Liverpool want to complete negotiations before the World Cup finals begin on June 11, believing the tournament could dramatically increase both the player’s market value and competition for his signature if he performs well internationally.

Discussions between Liverpool and Diomande’s representatives are reportedly already underway, with the player himself said to be highly interested in the possibility of moving to Anfield. Sources suggest the Ivory Coast international views Liverpool as one of the biggest clubs in world football and is open to becoming part of the club’s rebuilding project.

However, securing the transfer will not be straightforward. RB Leipzig reportedly have no intention of losing the 19-year-old easily and are demanding at least €100 million for the highly-rated winger. The Bundesliga club views Diomande as one of the brightest young attacking talents in European football and are believed to value him accordingly.

Despite the enormous asking price, reports suggest Liverpool owners FSG are prepared to meet Leipzig’s demands if necessary. If the transfer eventually happens at that valuation, Diomande would become the most expensive Ivorian footballer in history.

At present, that record belongs to Nicolas Pepe, who joined Arsenal from Lille for approximately €80 million in 2019. Liverpool are reportedly willing to surpass that figure significantly because of their belief in Diomande’s long-term potential and suitability for the club’s future.

The winger is reportedly viewed internally as the ideal successor to Mohamed Salah, whose future at Liverpool appears increasingly uncertain. Salah’s relationship with former manager Arne Slot reportedly deteriorated throughout the season, and the Egyptian superstar has already confirmed that he will leave the club this summer.

Replacing a player of Salah’s quality and influence is naturally viewed as one of Liverpool’s biggest priorities heading into the next transfer window. Club officials reportedly believe Diomande possesses the speed, technical quality, attacking unpredictability, and long-term ceiling needed to eventually become one of Europe’s elite wide forwards.

The player himself has also spoken openly about his ambitions in recent interviews. When recently asked about reports suggesting Leipzig could demand as much as €150 million for him, Diomande admitted he was aware of the growing speculation surrounding his future.

He reportedly acknowledged that such figures are enormous but also made it clear that he dreams of eventually playing for one of Europe’s biggest clubs. Without directly naming Liverpool as his preferred destination, Diomande openly admitted that moving to a major European giant is part of his long-term ambition.

The young winger explained that throughout his career he has consistently aimed to climb to higher levels and continue progressing. He reflected on how quickly his football journey has developed, pointing out that he previously played for Leganés before eventually securing his move to RB Leipzig.

Diomande also revealed details about the difficult path he faced earlier in his development. According to the winger, he previously spent time on trial at several clubs across Europe, including Rangers, Chelsea, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, and Olympiacos.

He admitted that many of those trials went positively on the pitch and even claimed he spoke directly with Mauricio Pochettino during his time at Chelsea. However, despite performing well during those opportunities, permanent deals never materialized.

Eventually, the repeated setbacks reportedly left Diomande frustrated enough to consider stepping away from pursuing those opportunities entirely. He explained that after his final trial spell in Greece, he informed his agent that he no longer wanted to continue moving around unsuccessfully between clubs.

Instead, he decided to focus fully on signing professionally with Leganés, believing stability was more important for his development at that stage of his career. That decision ultimately helped relaunch his progress and eventually led to his breakthrough move to RB Leipzig.

Now, only a few years later, Diomande is reportedly being linked with one of the biggest transfers of the summer window. If Liverpool succeed in completing the deal, it would represent a massive statement of intent ahead of what could become a completely new chapter under Andoni Iraola.

With a managerial change approaching, Mohamed Salah preparing to leave, and Liverpool aggressively targeting one of Europe’s brightest young talents, the club appears determined to rebuild quickly and return to competing at the very highest level once again.
