Manchester United Pull Out of Mateus Fernandes Race as Tottenham Complete Big-Money Move

Manchester United have reportedly decided not to match Tottenham Hotspur’s final offer for highly rated midfielder Mateus Fernandes, despite making a significant attempt to bring the Portuguese youngster to Old Trafford earlier in the transfer window.

Fernandes attracted attention from several of Europe’s biggest clubs this summer. Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid were all credited with monitoring the talented 21-year-old, but Manchester United initially appeared to be leading the race for his signature.

After ending their interest in Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson because of the huge asking price, United shifted their full attention toward Fernandes, identifying him as one of their priority midfield targets ahead of the new campaign.

Earlier this month, the Red Devils completed the signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson in a deal worth around £39 million.

However, club officials reportedly viewed Fernandes as a completely different type of investment—a younger player with enormous long-term potential who could eventually become one of Europe’s top midfielders.

United believed his versatility, technical quality and tireless work rate made him an ideal addition to Michael Carrick’s rebuilding project.

Despite West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League, the club remained convinced that Fernandes possessed the quality to compete at the highest level and could develop into a cornerstone of the midfield for years to come.

Unfortunately for United, negotiations became increasingly difficult because West Ham refused to lower their valuation of the Portuguese international.

The London club stood firm, demanding £85 million, a figure Manchester United considered excessive despite their admiration for the player.

Reports also suggested that Fernandes, who has previously spoken about his admiration for Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, was open to discussions with the Red Devils. However, Tottenham’s late intervention dramatically changed the direction of the transfer.

The North London club entered negotiations aggressively and quickly demonstrated their willingness to meet West Ham’s financial demands without hesitation.

According to respected Old Trafford sources, Manchester United did submit an overall package worth £85 million, but the structure of the proposal differed significantly from Tottenham’s offer.

United’s bid reportedly consisted of £70 million paid immediately, with a further £15 million dependent on future performance-related bonuses.

Personal terms were also attractive, with the midfielder allegedly offered wages close to £170,000 per week, an impressive salary for a player still only 21 years old.

However, Tottenham’s proposal proved far more appealing to West Ham because it guaranteed the full £85 million payment immediately rather than spreading part of the fee through future add-ons.

West Ham reportedly informed Manchester United that they would have the opportunity to match Tottenham’s all-cash proposal before any agreement was finalized.

After considering the situation, United’s hierarchy declined to increase their guaranteed payment, effectively ending their pursuit of the midfielder.

Although many supporters have expressed disappointment at missing out on one of Europe’s brightest young talents, others understand the club’s reasoning.

Manchester United’s current leadership remains determined to avoid repeating transfer mistakes made by previous administrations, when the club often paid inflated prices simply to secure high-profile signings.

INEOS appear committed to maintaining financial discipline, even if that means walking away from players they admire.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s willingness to pay the full asking price immediately proved decisive. Their aggressive approach allowed them to move ahead of United and complete one of the biggest transfers of the summer.

While Fernandes now looks set to begin the next chapter of his career in North London, Manchester United are expected to continue searching for alternative midfield options as Michael Carrick prepares his squad for the challenges of the new season.
