Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot Suffer World Cup Heartbreak as Portugal Fall to Spain

Manchester United teammates Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot endured a disappointing end to their 2026 FIFA World Cup journey after Portugal were narrowly eliminated by Spain in a dramatic knockout encounter.

The defeat brought an abrupt end to Portugal’s hopes of lifting football’s biggest prize, leaving both United stars with the difficult task of recovering before returning to club duty ahead of the new season.

The match was an intense and evenly balanced contest from the opening whistle. Both Portugal and Spain enjoyed promising spells of possession and managed to create several dangerous opportunities, but neither side could find the decisive breakthrough during most of the game.

Strong defending, disciplined midfield play, and impressive goalkeeping kept the score level, with many supporters beginning to believe that the contest would require extra time to determine the winner.

Just as the game appeared destined for another thirty minutes, Spain produced the decisive moment. Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino came off the bench and made an immediate impact.

Timing his run perfectly, he found space behind the Portuguese defence before being played through on goal.

Showing great composure under pressure, Merino calmly finished past the goalkeeper to hand Spain a dramatic late winner and secure their place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Portugal pushed forward desperately in search of an equaliser during the closing moments. Bernardo Silva came closest to rescuing his side when he met a cross inside the penalty area, but his header drifted narrowly over the crossbar.

Despite their late efforts, Roberto Martinez’s team could not force the game into extra time, bringing their World Cup campaign to a painful conclusion.

Bruno Fernandes once again started the match and remained one of Portugal’s key creative influences throughout the contest.

The Manchester United captain attempted to unlock the Spanish defence with his passing and movement, constantly looking to create opportunities for his teammates.

According to the match statistics, Fernandes registered one shot during the game and produced two key passes that created promising attacking situations.

He attempted five crosses, successfully finding a teammate with two of them, while also completing four of his ten long passes.

His willingness to take responsibility in possession remained evident as he touched the ball 67 times during his appearance.

Although Fernandes attempted one dribble, he was unable to complete it successfully. Defensively, he also contributed by making two clearances and five ball recoveries, demonstrating his work rate away from the ball.

In aerial situations, he proved effective by winning his only aerial duel, although he managed to win only one of the three ground duels he contested.

Diogo Dalot entered the game during the second half as Portugal searched for greater attacking energy and defensive stability.

Despite having only 19 minutes to influence proceedings, the Manchester United defender worked hard to make an impact.

Dalot produced a solid defensive display during his time on the pitch. He won the only tackle he attempted and succeeded in one of his two ground duels.

The right-back also contributed three recoveries, helping Portugal regain possession on several occasions as they chased an equalising goal.

In possession, Dalot remained composed and efficient. He touched the ball 14 times and completed seven of his eight attempted passes, finishing the match with an impressive individual pass accuracy of 88 percent.

Although both Manchester United players performed professionally, neither was able to prevent Portugal’s elimination from the tournament.

Spain’s late breakthrough ultimately proved decisive, ending Portugal’s hopes of progressing any further in the competition.

With their international duties now complete, Fernandes and Dalot will turn their attention back to Manchester United.

After taking a short period to rest and recover from the physical and emotional demands of the World Cup, both players are expected to report back to Carrington for pre-season training.

Michael Carrick will be eager to have two of his experienced Portuguese internationals refreshed and ready as preparations begin for what promises to be another important campaign at Old Trafford.
