Manchester United Supporters Impressed by Andrey Santos After Encouraging Debut Against Wrexham
Manchester United’s pre-season campaign may have started with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Wrexham, but one of the biggest talking points after the match was the performance of new signing Andrey Santos.
The Brazilian midfielder made his first appearance for the Red Devils during the friendly in Helsinki, and despite the result, many supporters came away feeling optimistic about what he could bring to Michael Carrick’s side in the coming season.
The match marked the beginning of Carrick’s first full pre-season as Manchester United’s permanent manager. With several senior players still building match fitness and a number of academy prospects also involved, the team showed signs of rustiness throughout the contest.
Wrexham capitalized on one of their opportunities during the first half through Sam Smith, whose well-taken goal ultimately proved to be the difference between the two sides.
Although United were unable to find an equaliser, Santos emerged as one of the brightest performers on the pitch.
The midfielder, who completed a reported £50 million move from Chelsea earlier this summer, was handed his debut in midfield and immediately showed glimpses of why the club invested heavily in his services.
Carrick opted to deploy Santos in a midfield partnership with Mason Mount, while promising youngster Jack Fletcher operated further forward.
As Mount frequently pushed into attacking areas, Santos often found himself taking responsibility for controlling the tempo of United’s play from deeper positions.
Rather than being overwhelmed by the responsibility, the 22-year-old looked composed and confident throughout his time on the pitch.
One of the standout features of Santos’ performance was his calmness in possession. He consistently made himself available to receive passes from teammates, kept the ball moving efficiently, and showed an impressive willingness to play forward whenever opportunities presented themselves.
Instead of taking unnecessary risks, he balanced safe possession with progressive passing, helping United maintain control during long spells of the first half.
Defensively, Santos also demonstrated qualities that caught the attention of supporters. He positioned himself intelligently to break up opposition attacks and frequently stepped in to recover possession before Wrexham could launch dangerous counterattacks.
His anticipation, combined with strong tackling and disciplined positioning, suggested he possesses the defensive awareness needed to thrive in the Premier League.
The statistics from his debut further reflected his positive contribution. Santos recorded 55 touches of the ball during his 45 minutes on the field and completed 39 of his 42 attempted passes, giving him an outstanding pass accuracy of 93 percent.
He also created two chances for teammates, played several passes into the attacking third, and contributed two tackles and two interceptions while winning the majority of his ground duels.
Despite being substituted at half-time along with the rest of the starting lineup, Santos left a strong impression. Carrick is likely to be encouraged by the midfielder’s composure, tactical intelligence, and ability to contribute both in possession and without the ball.
For a player making his first appearance in new surroundings, his display suggested there is plenty of potential to build upon in the months ahead.
Manchester United supporters were quick to share their opinions across social media, and the overall reaction was overwhelmingly positive.
Many fans praised the Brazilian’s football intelligence, highlighting how he constantly made himself available for passes and appeared comfortable dictating play from deep midfield.
Others pointed to his defensive work rate, believing he offered balance that United have sometimes lacked in recent seasons.
Some supporters even suggested Chelsea could eventually regret allowing Santos to leave, arguing that his debut hinted at a player capable of becoming one of the Premier League’s top midfielders.
Others appreciated his maturity, noting that while the overall team performance was below expectations, Santos remained composed and rarely looked unsettled under pressure.
Of course, one encouraging performance in a pre-season friendly does not guarantee future success. There is still plenty of work to be done before the Premier League season begins, and Santos will need time to fully adapt to Carrick’s tactical demands. Nevertheless, his debut has given Manchester United fans genuine reasons for optimism.
As pre-season continues, attention will remain on how the Brazilian develops alongside his new teammates. If his first outing is any indication, Manchester United may have secured a midfielder capable of becoming an important figure in the club’s long-term rebuild under Michael Carrick.
