Manchester United are continuing their search for another central midfielder this summer, and fresh reports have suggested that Real Madrid star Aurélien Tchouaméni could become an option if circumstances change in the Spanish capital.
While completing such a transfer would be far from straightforward, recent speculation has offered supporters a small reason to believe that the French international might not be completely out of reach.
Strengthening the midfield has reportedly remained one of Manchester United’s biggest priorities following Michael Carrick’s encouraging work during the second half of last season.
The club has already made progress by adding fresh talent to the squad, with Andrey Santos arriving from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans completing a move from Aston Villa.
Those additions have improved the depth of the midfield, but reports indicate that Carrick is still hoping to bring in another player capable of raising the overall standard in the centre of the pitch.
Earlier in the transfer window, Atalanta midfielder Ederson appeared to be one of United’s leading targets.
However, that proposed move reportedly collapsed after concerns arose during the medical process, forcing the club to explore alternative options instead.
Since then, several midfielders have been linked with Old Trafford, including Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, Manu Koné, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Eduardo Camavinga.
Among those names, Tchouaméni continues to stand out as one of the most admired players on Manchester United’s shortlist.
The French international has developed into one of Europe’s leading midfielders since joining Real Madrid, impressing with his defensive intelligence, passing ability, physical presence, and composure under pressure.
His performances for both club and country have strengthened his reputation as one of the continent’s elite midfield players.
Journalist Andy Mitten has suggested that Manchester United supporters should not completely dismiss the possibility of a move.
Speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast, Mitten explained that United have admired Tchouaméni for a long time and have monitored his progress over several seasons.
According to him, Real Madrid’s recent spending in the transfer market could eventually create pressure for the Spanish giants to sell one of their valuable assets in order to balance their finances.
Mitten stressed that Tchouaméni himself remains happy in Madrid and has shown no public desire to leave the club.
However, he pointed out that football situations can change quickly, particularly when clubs invest heavily in new signings.
If Real Madrid eventually decide they need to raise significant funds through player sales, Tchouaméni could become one of the names considered.
Even so, Mitten acknowledged that the financial aspect would represent a major challenge for Manchester United.
Real Madrid would almost certainly demand a substantial transfer fee, especially given the enormous amounts Premier League clubs have spent in recent transfer windows. On top of that, Tchouaméni’s salary expectations would likely make any deal even more complicated.
Despite the optimism offered by Mitten, other reports paint a more cautious picture. Manchester Evening News journalist Steven Railston claims that sources close to Manchester United believe a move is currently unrealistic because of the cost involved.
According to those reports, the club accepts that Tchouaméni is one of their dream midfield targets, but they also recognise that Real Madrid would likely value him at a level beyond what United are prepared to pay.
Railston suggests that Manchester United would be willing to make an offer if Real Madrid signalled a willingness to negotiate at a more reasonable price.
However, there is currently no indication that the Spanish club is prepared to lower its valuation or actively place the French midfielder on the transfer market.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also indicated that Real Madrid may eventually need to generate income following significant investment in new players.
However, he has not confirmed that Tchouaméni is available for transfer or that negotiations with Manchester United have begun.
For now, Manchester United’s admiration for Aurélien Tchouaméni remains genuine, but completing a deal would require several factors to align.
Real Madrid would need to become willing sellers, the asking price would have to become financially realistic, and Manchester United would need to decide that the overall package represents value.
Until those conditions change, the possibility of seeing Tchouaméni at Old Trafford remains an intriguing transfer rumour rather than an imminent move.
