Manchester United have added another trophy to their pre-season preparations after defeating fierce rivals Leeds United in a dramatic penalty shootout at Croke Park in Dublin.
The match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, but the Red Devils remained composed from the penalty spot to eventually claim a 5-4 victory and lift the Boyle Sports Cup.
Although the competition is only a pre-season tournament, the result provides another positive moment for Michael Carrick and his players as they continue building toward the 2026/27 campaign.
The victory also gives United supporters another reason to remain optimistic about the direction of the team ahead of the new season.
The match itself produced plenty of entertainment, with both sides showing attacking intent while also exposing weaknesses that their respective coaching staffs will want to address before competitive football begins.
Manchester United made the breakthrough during the first half when Joshua Zirkzee found the back of the net. The striker finished confidently after receiving a clever assist from Bryan Mbeumo, who once again demonstrated his ability to influence United’s attacking play.

The error allowed Leeds to get back into the contest and ensured that the remainder of the match would be played at a much higher level of tension.
Both teams had opportunities to find a decisive second goal, but neither side could produce the breakthrough before the referee brought normal time to an end.
With the score locked at 1-1, the Boyle Sports Cup had to be decided through penalties.
The shootout provided another tense moment for the supporters inside Croke Park. Manchester United’s players kept their composure despite the pressure, successfully converting their opportunities while waiting for Leeds to make a mistake.
Eventually, the decisive moment arrived when Noussair Mazraoui stepped forward to take the final penalty for United.

The victory was particularly useful for Carrick because the manager used the occasion to continue experimenting with his squad.
Several players were given valuable minutes, while some of United’s more established stars were introduced during the second half as the manager continued assessing his options.
Pre-season matches provide managers with an opportunity to test different tactical approaches, evaluate individual players and improve fitness levels.
Carrick will therefore have plenty to analyse from the performance, including the positive attacking combinations as well as the defensive lapses that allowed Leeds to equalise.
The triumph may not carry the same importance as a Premier League, Champions League or domestic cup victory, but winning silverware is still a welcome boost during preparations.
