Tensions at Manchester United are reportedly rising behind the scenes following the club’s disappointing 4-2 pre-season defeat to AC Milan in Wrocław, with manager Michael Carrick allegedly holding serious discussions with the INEOS hierarchy about the quality and depth of his squad.
The defeat has reportedly strengthened Carrick’s belief that Manchester United still have important weaknesses that must be addressed before the Premier League campaign gets underway.
After successfully guiding the club back into Champions League football, the manager is said to be determined not to enter the new season with shortcomings that could prevent his tactical plans from working effectively.
According to claims circulating around the club, Carrick has delivered a strong message to the Manchester United leadership, warning that the current squad may be competitive enough to win individual matches but could struggle to challenge consistently for major trophies.
The manager is reportedly particularly concerned about the team’s athleticism, defensive recovery and ability to deal with opponents during transitions.
The AC Milan match appeared to highlight many of those issues.
Manchester United made an excellent start when Harry Maguire headed Bruno Fernandes’ corner into the net after just two minutes, giving Carrick’s side an early advantage.
However, Milan gradually grew into the contest and eventually equalised before the interval through Samuel Chukwueze.
United managed to regain the lead shortly after half-time when Patrick Dorgu capitalised on an error to put the Red Devils 2-1 ahead.
At that stage, United appeared to be in control.
But the situation changed dramatically during the second half.
Milan repeatedly exposed spaces behind United’s defensive structure and began exploiting weaknesses whenever the Red Devils lost possession.
Between the 57th and 71st minutes, the Italian side reportedly scored three times to completely turn the game around.
Alphadjo Cissé brought Milan level before Gonçalo Ramos put the Rossoneri ahead. Ruben Loftus-Cheek then added another goal to complete a remarkable 4-2 comeback.
For Carrick, the issue reportedly went beyond simply losing a friendly match.
The manager is said to have been particularly concerned by United’s inability to track runners, recover quickly, protect the wide areas and stop Milan’s counter-attacking movements.
Rather than dismissing the result as a normal pre-season setback, Carrick allegedly viewed the performance as evidence that certain weaknesses could become serious problems once competitive football begins.
Reports claim the United boss now wants the club to strengthen two important positions before the transfer window closes.
Among the players reportedly being considered are Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall and Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.
Hall is believed to be viewed as a potential solution to United’s need for greater speed, energy and defensive recovery on the left side of the team. His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively could provide Carrick with another tactical option.
Baleba, meanwhile, would offer additional physical strength in midfield. His ability to win possession, cover ground and protect the defence could help United become more difficult to break down.
Carrick is reportedly keen on strengthening both areas because United will have to deal with the demands of Premier League football while also competing in the Champions League.
The manager allegedly believes that improved athleticism and defensive resilience are essential if Manchester United are serious about challenging for major honours.
There is also reportedly concern about depending too heavily on certain existing players whose physical attributes may not perfectly suit Carrick’s tactical requirements.
However, it is important to stress that the reported Carrick ultimatum and alleged private discussions with INEOS have not been officially confirmed. The claims should therefore be treated cautiously.
The reports have nevertheless sparked considerable debate among Manchester United supporters.
Some fans believe Carrick deserves to receive the players he needs after successfully restoring Champions League football. Others argue that the manager must also demonstrate that he can improve the players already available rather than relying entirely on the transfer market.
With the Premier League opener approaching quickly, the pressure is now on INEOS to decide how aggressively they want to strengthen the squad.
If Carrick’s reported concerns are genuine, the final stages of the transfer window could be crucial.
Manchester United cannot afford another campaign in which tactical ambitions are repeatedly undermined by weaknesses within the squad.
The defeat against AC Milan may have been a friendly, but it has undoubtedly provided Carrick with plenty to analyse. Now, supporters will be watching closely to see whether INEOS responds with the reinforcements the manager reportedly wants.
