Manchester United’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Hull City has created a fresh tactical debate around Patrick Dorgu and how he should be used by Michael Carrick.
The young defender was deployed in a more advanced position on the left during the opening Premier League fixture, but the experiment failed to produce the attacking impact United were hoping for.
As a result, there are now growing suggestions that the team could benefit from moving Dorgu back into his natural defensive position while giving Marcus Rashford a more prominent role further forward.
United dominated possession against Hull, controlling approximately 72 percent of the ball, but that dominance did not translate into enough dangerous attacking opportunities.
The Red Devils struggled to penetrate Hull’s organised defence and repeatedly found themselves unable to turn possession into clear chances.
Despite having plenty of control, United lacked the creativity, movement and cutting edge required to break through.
Dorgu’s selection in an attacking role was not entirely surprising. The 21-year-old has several physical qualities that can make him an exciting player in the final third.
His pace, strength and ability to carry the ball over long distances make him capable of causing problems for defenders. However, playing as a winger demands more than speed and physical power.
A traditional attacking player must also possess consistent movement, strong decision-making around the penalty area and the ability to create or finish chances.
Those are aspects of Dorgu’s game that are still developing. His performance against Hull suggested that he may not yet be ready to consistently provide the attacking output United require from that position.
The coaching staff had already tested Dorgu higher up the pitch during pre-season, indicating that Carrick was interested in discovering whether the youngster could develop into a more attacking option.
However, the opening-day defeat offered limited evidence that the experiment is currently working.
The situation became even more intriguing when Rashford replaced Dorgu. The returning forward immediately offered a different type of threat, particularly with his pace and willingness to make runs behind the opposition defence.
Although Rashford could not prevent United from losing, his introduction demonstrated the difference between the two players and naturally raised questions about their most effective positions.
One possible solution would be to restore Dorgu to left-back while allowing Rashford to operate in a more advanced attacking position. From left-back, Dorgu could potentially make better use of his pace and power.
He would have the opportunity to move forward from deeper areas, overlap with attackers and exploit space without carrying the full creative responsibility expected from a conventional winger.
This arrangement could also allow Dorgu to focus on the defensive duties that are more familiar to him while still giving United an attacking outlet from the left flank.
Carrick now has an important tactical decision to make, especially with Luke Shaw also available as another defensive option.
Dorgu’s struggles against Hull should not necessarily be interpreted as evidence that he can never succeed as a winger.
At just 21, there is plenty of time for him to improve his attacking qualities and become more comfortable in advanced areas.
However, United need solutions immediately. The Hull defeat exposed serious problems with their attacking efficiency, and the manager cannot afford to wait indefinitely for a tactical experiment to produce results.
It is also important to recognise that Dorgu was not solely responsible for the defeat. United conceded both goals from set-piece situations and failed to make their overwhelming possession count.
The team repeatedly moved the ball without creating enough genuine danger, highlighting a wider problem with attacking efficiency and end product.
Returning Dorgu to left-back could therefore be a practical adjustment rather than a criticism of the player.
His physical qualities could become even more useful when he begins attacks from deeper positions, while Rashford’s experience, pace and direct style could give United more penetration closer to the opposition goal.
Ultimately, one poor performance should not define Dorgu’s long-term position. Nevertheless, the defeat at Hull has given Carrick plenty to think about.
A left side featuring Dorgu at full-back and Rashford higher up the pitch could potentially offer United a better balance between defensive security, pace and attacking threat as the season progresses.
