Manchester United have reportedly increased their efforts to sign Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde as Michael Carrick continues looking for another option on the left side of his defence.
However, negotiations could prove complicated because United and Barcelona are believed to have completely different ideas about how the transfer should be structured.
According to reports, Manchester United are closely monitoring Balde’s situation at Camp Nou as the transfer deadline approaches.
The Spanish defender has reportedly become an attractive option for the Red Devils, particularly because of his pace, athleticism and attacking qualities.
United are said to prefer a season-long loan agreement with an option to buy at the end of the campaign. Such a deal would allow the club to bring Balde to England, assess how he adapts to the demands of the Premier League and then decide whether to make his transfer permanent.
Barcelona, however, are reportedly not enthusiastic about that proposal. The Catalan giants would apparently prefer to sell Balde permanently and are believed to value the 22-year-old at approximately £26 million to £34 million.
Barcelona’s preference for an immediate transfer fee has therefore created a significant obstacle in negotiations.
The difference between the two positions is clear. Manchester United want flexibility through a loan arrangement, while Barcelona are looking for a permanent sale that would provide them with an immediate financial boost.
Balde’s own wishes could also become an important factor. If the defender is open to leaving Camp Nou and sees Manchester United as an attractive destination, his preference could potentially influence how the situation develops.
However, there is currently no agreement between the clubs, and reports suggesting that the transfer is already close should be treated cautiously.
United’s interest in Balde is understandable. The club are searching for additional competition and depth at left-back, while their pursuit of Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall has reportedly become increasingly complicated.
Balde would provide a different profile, offering tremendous speed and the ability to contribute heavily when attacking from deep.
His current situation at Barcelona has also added another layer of uncertainty. Balde was reportedly left out of Barcelona’s opening La Liga match against Elche, with manager Hansi Flick explaining that the player needed time to clear his mind and regain his focus.
That explanation immediately generated more speculation about the defender’s future.
Despite all the rumours, Manchester United are reportedly being cautious about the possibility of completing the deal.
The club are understood to be aware of Barcelona’s position, and contact has reportedly taken place, but there is no clear indication that an agreement is imminent.
Barcelona must now decide whether Balde remains an important part of Flick’s plans or whether accepting a substantial permanent transfer fee would be more beneficial.
United, meanwhile, must consider whether they are willing to change their preferred loan-to-buy structure if Barcelona refuse to compromise.
With the transfer deadline getting closer, the situation could develop rapidly. A breakthrough could still see Balde move to Old Trafford, potentially beginning with a loan before a permanent transfer is considered.
For now, however, the two clubs remain apart over the structure and financial terms of the proposed deal.
