Manchester United’s search for another left-back is entering an increasingly important stage, with the club now faced with several different routes to strengthen the position before the transfer window closes.
As deadline day approaches, the need for additional quality and depth on the left side of the defence is becoming harder for the Red Devils to ignore.
One of the names attracting serious attention is Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde. The 22-year-old Spanish international has reportedly emerged as an appealing option for United as Michael Carrick looks for a player capable of providing competition and greater attacking threat from the left-back position.
Barcelona are believed to be open to discussing a potential sale, with a figure of around €45 million, approximately £38 million, being mentioned.
However, the major issue for Manchester United is the financial commitment involved. United are reportedly reluctant to spend such a substantial amount at this stage of the transfer window, particularly when there are other areas of the squad that may still require investment.
Because of that, a loan arrangement could potentially provide a solution. United could attempt to bring Balde to Old Trafford for the season without paying the full transfer fee immediately.
Such a deal could give Carrick access to an experienced and talented defender while allowing the club to protect its remaining transfer budget. Ideally, United would also want an option to make the move permanent once the loan period ends.
Balde’s uncertain situation at Barcelona has only made the story more interesting. The young defender was unexpectedly left out of Barcelona’s squad for their opening LaLiga fixture, despite there being no clear indication that an injury was responsible.
Manager Hansi Flick reportedly explained that Balde needed some time to clear his mind, which naturally increased speculation about his future.
Manchester United are also believed to have already made contact regarding the player, suggesting that the Spanish full-back is being seriously considered rather than simply appearing on a long recruitment shortlist.
However, Balde is not the only option being discussed. Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall reportedly remains United’s preferred long-term target.
The young English defender has been admired by the club for some time, but Newcastle have maintained a strong position that Hall is not available for transfer this summer.
Attempting to force Newcastle into selling would likely require United to make a substantial financial offer, something the club reportedly does not want to do at this point.
As a result, United could decide to use a temporary solution this summer before returning to the Hall situation in the future.
Another name attracting attention is 19-year-old Jorge Salinas of Racing Santander. Salinas reportedly has a release clause of around €16 million, making him considerably cheaper than both Balde and Hall.
Rather than providing an immediate high-profile solution, the teenager would represent an investment in potential, with United potentially developing him into a first-team player over time.
Atlético Madrid are also reportedly monitoring Salinas, meaning United could face competition if they decide to pursue the young defender.
The situation therefore leaves Manchester United with three very different possibilities. Balde could provide immediate quality and experience, but his price may be problematic.
Hall remains an attractive long-term option, although Newcastle are unwilling to negotiate. Salinas represents a cheaper and younger gamble with plenty of development potential.
With Luke Shaw currently providing senior experience at left-back, strengthening the position remains an important priority for a United squad facing a demanding campaign.
The big question now is what route United will choose. Will Carrick push for Balde on loan, wait until next summer for Lewis Hall, or take a calculated gamble on Salinas?
