Liverpool vs Manchester City line-ups: Cherki, Barcola and Jacquet start, first Premier League start for Koumas

    adminBy adminOctober 11, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has made a surprising selection decision ahead of his team’s highly anticipated Premier League clash against Manchester City, handing young forward Lewis Koumas his first league start as the Reds deal with several important attacking absences.

With a number of established attacking players unavailable, Iraola has decided to trust youth rather than completely reshape his tactical approach. The decision puts Koumas in the spotlight for a fixture in which Liverpool will need to be sharp, organised and clinical against one of the league’s most dangerous opponents.

Meanwhile, Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has opted for stability, making just one alteration to the team that secured an impressive 5-3 victory over Sunderland before the international break.

KOUMAS LEADS THE LINE AS LIVERPOOL DEAL WITH KEY ABSENCES

According to L’Équipe, 21-year-old Welsh forward Koumas, who was born in 2005, has been selected to lead Liverpool’s attack. He will receive support from Bradley Barcola, Florian Wirtz and Victor Munoz, forming an attacking unit that combines pace, creativity and movement.

Liverpool’s selection has been influenced by the absence of several important first-team players. Cody Gakpo, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike are all missing, leaving Iraola with fewer established attacking options for the encounter.

The midfield has also been affected, with Dominik Szoboszlai unavailable for selection. Ryan Gravenberch will therefore partner Alexis Mac Allister in the middle of the pitch, while Jérémy Jacquet is included in the defensive setup.

The opportunity represents a significant moment for Koumas, who will be expected to make the most of his first Premier League start. Facing Manchester City is a demanding introduction, but the young forward will have the chance to demonstrate his ability against elite opposition.

Liverpool’s attacking approach is expected to rely on the movement of Barcola, Wirtz and Munoz behind Koumas, with Gravenberch and Mac Allister responsible for helping the team control possession and provide service to the forward players.

MAresca MAKES JUST ONE CHANGE TO MANCHESTER CITY’S LINE-UP

On the opposite side, Manchester City have maintained faith in the starting eleven that defeated Sunderland 5-3 in their previous league outing.

Maresca has made only one change, bringing Nico O’Reilly into the starting team at left-back in place of Josko Gvardiol.

Despite his promising performances, Ayyoub Bouaddi has been named among the substitutes. Enzo Fernandez and Eliot Anderson will instead form the deeper midfield partnership, providing support for City’s attacking players.

The decision to retain most of the previous starting lineup suggests that Maresca wants his team to continue building on the attacking performance they produced before the break.

City will look to use their technical quality, movement and attacking combinations to create opportunities against a Liverpool side that has been forced to make adjustments because of injuries and other absences.

HOW LIVERPOOL ARE EXPECTED TO LINE UP

Liverpool are set to begin with Alisson in goal, protected by a back four consisting of Araujo, captain Virgil van Dijk, Jérémy Jacquet and Kerkez.

Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister will operate in central midfield, while Victor Munoz, Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola are expected to provide attacking support behind Koumas.

The anticipated formation is a 4-2-3-1, allowing Liverpool to maintain two players in midfield while giving their attacking quartet the freedom to create chances.

Much will depend on how effectively the supporting players can connect with Koumas and whether Liverpool can turn their attacking possession into clear opportunities.

    MANCHESTER CITY’S EXPECTED STARTING ELEVEN

Manchester City are expected to field Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal, with Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guéhi, Rúben Dias and Nunes forming the defensive line. Dias will captain the side.

Enzo Fernandez and Eliot Anderson are expected to operate in the deeper midfield positions, while Antoine Semenyo, Rayan Cherki and Ndiaye provide attacking support for Erling Haaland.

City are also expected to use a 4-2-3-1 formation, mirroring Liverpool’s anticipated tactical structure.

The arrangement gives Haaland a central attacking role while allowing the three supporting players to move into dangerous positions, create chances and exploit spaces around Liverpool’s defence.

A MAJOR TEST FOR BOTH MANAGERS

The match presents different challenges for the two managers. Iraola must find a way to keep Liverpool competitive despite missing several important attacking players, while Maresca will hope his side can maintain the momentum generated by their previous victory.

For Koumas, the occasion offers an opportunity to make a strong impression and demonstrate that he can contribute at the highest level. For Liverpool, the performance of their young forward and the effectiveness of their reshuffled attack could prove particularly important.

Manchester City, meanwhile, will be looking to take advantage of any uncertainty in Liverpool’s lineup while maintaining the attacking threat that has made them difficult opponents.

With both teams expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, the battle in midfield and the effectiveness of their attacking players could play a major role in determining the outcome.

All eyes will be on Koumas as he prepares for his first Premier League start, while Liverpool supporters wait to see whether Iraola’s bold selection decision can deliver the desired result against Manchester City.
