On Saturday evening, large sections of the Real Madrid fanbase once again voiced their displeasure regarding what they perceive to be the ongoing poor standard of officiating in La Liga. The controversy stems from a series of incidents that unfolded during Barcelona’s clash with RCD Mallorca.
The Catalan giants began the defence of their Spanish league title with a trip to Son Moix, and it didn’t take long before the game was wrapped up in their favour.
Within the opening half-hour, Barcelona had already taken a commanding lead, leaving Mallorca with a mountain to climb.
The scoring opened early when Raphinha capitalised on an opportunity from close range, slotting the ball home to hand Barcelona the advantage. Soon after, Ferran Torres doubled the lead for the visitors, but his goal came in highly unusual and contentious circumstances.
As Mallorca were in the midst of dealing with a head injury to one of their players, several of their men stopped playing, expecting the referee to halt the match.
To their disbelief, play was allowed to continue, with Ferran firing in a superb finish. The decision not to stop the game sparked immediate outrage, as many felt the referee should have intervened out of concern for player safety.
The controversies, however, didn’t stop there. Just past the half-hour mark, Mallorca’s problems worsened when Manu Morlanes received his second yellow card, leaving the hosts with ten men.
Matters deteriorated further when Vedat Muriqi was also dismissed for a reckless high challenge on Joan García, forcing Mallorca to play with nine men against the reigning champions.
These events at Son Moix quickly became the subject of intense debate, particularly among Real Madrid supporters. Many Blancos fans were left furious, claiming that the refereeing decisions once again seemed to tilt in Barcelona’s favour.
On social media and across fan forums, Madridistas highlighted what they described as blatant double standards, accusing referees of protecting Barcelona while being excessively harsh towards other teams.
Beyond frustration over the match itself, this incident reignited a broader discussion about the credibility and fairness of La Liga.
A significant number of Real Madrid supporters argued that such decisions undermine the league’s integrity, suggesting that the balance of officiating consistently benefits Barcelona in critical moments. For many, the handling of the Mallorca clash served as yet another example in a long list of questionable refereeing calls which they feel cast Spanish football in a negative light.
