“Odegaard isn’t Captain Material” Pundit Says As He Names Arsenal Star Who Should Be Made Captain

    adminBy adminSeptember 16, 2023No Comments2 Mins Read

Stan Collymore, a former Liverpool and Aston Villa attacker, shared his perspective on Martin Odegaard, a pivotal player for Arsenal, and the potential extension of his contract.

Collymore views Odegaard’s contract extension as a positive development for Arsenal, emphasizing the player’s significant contributions since his arrival from Real Madrid in 2021.

Odegaard has proven to be instrumental in Arsenal’s progress, helping transform them into genuine title contenders.

Collymore stressed the importance of securing Odegaard’s commitment, acknowledging him as arguably Arsenal’s best player, and highlighting the club’s ambition and dedication to their project.

He emphasized the need to prevent losing such a vital player without a substantial return, especially given Odegaard’s contract approaching its expiry at the end of the next season.

However, Collymore also expressed reservations about Odegaard’s suitability as a captain. Despite recognizing Odegaard’s exceptional technical abilities and his status as one of the country’s top midfielders, he questioned whether Odegaard possesses the leadership qualities necessary to drive the team to the next level.

Collymore referenced Arsenal’s previous season, where they lost a significant lead and ultimately conceded the title to Manchester City, as evidence that Odegaard might not be the ideal captain.

In Collymore’s view, Odegaard lacks the commanding, warrior-type leadership associated with players like Patrick Vieira and Roy Keane, who could motivate and rally their teams.

He emphasized the need for such leaders in a football team and expressed uncertainty if Arsenal currently has a player who fits that mold. Collymore considered Declan Rice a potential future leader but noted the difficulty in awarding him the captaincy without upsetting Odegaard and the rest of the squad.
