In another distressing instance of racism within La Liga, Real Madrid’s star player, Vinicius Jr., found himself once again subjected to racial abuse from opposition fans, this time during the highly anticipated El Clasico match against Barcelona at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.
According to reports from MARCA, the young Brazilian winger, who had experienced racist taunts just a week earlier during a match against Sevilla, was once more targeted by unsavory chants when he was substituted in the latter stages of the game. These chants allegedly included derogatory slurs such as “monkey.”
The situation took an even more disheartening turn when Vinicius appeared to engage with a section of Barcelona supporters after an object, resembling a banana, was reportedly thrown in his direction by an opposition fan.
Unfortunately, the normalization of such reprehensible behavior from opposing fans is becoming an alarming trend in La Liga, with Vinicius increasingly being subjected to racist abuse.
Merely a weekend prior to this incident, the Brazilian player faced verbal abuse from a Sevilla fan, prompting swift action from the Andalusian club, who promptly removed the individual responsible.
MARCA also noted that La Liga is actively addressing the situation, identifying these racist insults directed at Vinicius Jr.
The league is collaborating with security teams to file the appropriate complaints against those involved in these incidents.
Putting the distressing episode aside, Real Madrid managed to make their visit to Barcelona a memorable one by securing a comeback victory of 2-1, largely propelled by Jude Bellingham’s remarkable second-half brace.
