Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski recently addressed rumors surrounding his future at the club, amidst speculation of a potential move this summer. Despite the circulating rumors, Lewandowski, who is contracted with the Spanish club until 2026, reaffirmed his commitment to staying with Barcelona and fulfilling his contract.
This season has been particularly challenging for Barcelona. The team’s performance has significantly dipped compared to last season, resulting in them trailing Real Madrid by 12 points with one game left in La Liga.
This stark contrast has increased pressure on manager Xavi and highlighted underperformance among several key players. Lewandowski, who claimed the Pichichi Trophy last season, has only managed to score 18 goals in 34 league matches this season, a number that falls short of his typically high standards.
Given the club’s financial issues and Lewandowski’s substantial salary, rumors about his potential departure gained traction. However, Lewandowski addressed these speculations in an interview with Mundo Deportivo, where he clarified his intention to remain at Barcelona and win more titles. He expressed his dedication to the club, stating:
“Of course, for me it is super clear. I want to win many titles with Barcelona and I am sure that next season we will be even stronger and we will also win titles. I always want the best, not just for me, but for my teammates and I am sure that this team will win titles next season because I see what we do each day. For me that is what matters because this is a club that I hold close to my heart and I want to give a lot for the team and the club.”
Lewandowski joined Barcelona from Bayern Munich in 2022 and made an immediate impact, leading them to a La Liga title in his first season. Since his arrival, the 35-year-old Polish striker has scored 58 goals in 94 appearances for the club, establishing himself as a key player.
Additionally, Lewandowski discussed the significant impact of Gavi’s absence due to injury. The young midfielder suffered an ACL injury while playing for Spain in November and has only featured in 12 league matches this season. In an interview with Marca, Lewandowski emphasized Gavi’s importance to the team. Despite his youth, Gavi has already made over 100 appearances for Barcelona. Lewandowski remarked:
“From the beginning we knew that we would miss him. He is a type of player who, when the game is not going well, with his movements and aggressiveness, lifts the team up. A squad needs these types of players and that is why we miss him. But we don’t have him, and now what we can do is wait for him to come back. He is a special player, since I arrived I saw that he had something that the team needs. He has talent and aggressiveness.”
Gavi is expected to recover in time for the pre-season, but he will not be available to participate in Euro 2024 with Spain. Both Gavi and Barcelona are hopeful for his strong return next season to aid in the club’s pursuit of titles.
