A key Liverpool star could reportedly request a surprising contract termination and transfer request.

A Liverpool player has recently spoken out about his frustration and uncertainty regarding his future with the club, following its summer transfer dealings.

The Reds had a relatively low-key transfer window, adding only two new players before the market closed. One of those signings was Federico Chiesa, who joined from Juventus for a fee of up to £12.5 million. The second was Giorgi Mamardashvili, a promising Georgian goalkeeper, who was signed from Valencia.

However, Mamardashvili will remain on loan at Valencia for the entirety of the 2024/25 season and is set to join Liverpool only in the 2025/26 season. Despite the fact that Mamardashvili will not arrive at Anfield for another year, his signing has reportedly left Liverpool’s current backup goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, feeling frustrated and unsure about his place in the team.

Kelleher, who has expressed his desire for regular playing time, is now questioning the club’s plans and direction.

Speaking ahead of Ireland’s Nations League match against Greece, Kelleher shared his thoughts on the situation. He stated, “I’ve been clear over the past few years that I want to be a number one and play consistently.” The 25-year-old goalkeeper suggested that Liverpool’s decision to acquire another goalkeeper indicates the club may not see him in their long-term plans as a starter.

Kelleher further explained that while many believe his future is entirely within his control, the reality is more complicated. “It’s been reported that Liverpool have turned down a few offers for me,” he said. “My ambition is clear: I believe I’m good enough, and I want to go out and prove it.” These words underline his desire for a more significant role, either at Liverpool or elsewhere, where he can showcase his abilities on a consistent basis.

Since joining Liverpool’s senior team, Kelleher has made 47 appearances, having been with the club his entire professional career. He made his debut in the 2019/20 season and has since been primarily used as a backup to Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper, Alisson Becker.

However, his ambition to be a number one has grown over the years, and the arrival of Mamardashvili seems to have intensified his concerns.

Kelleher’s frustration has only been heightened by Liverpool’s refusal to accept offers from other clubs, which would have given him the chance to secure a more prominent position elsewhere.

While his future remains uncertain, Kelleher made it clear that he is determined to prove himself, whether that is at Liverpool or another club.

He recently started in Ireland’s defeat to England, demonstrating his eagerness to continue developing his career at the highest level.

As things stand, Kelleher’s future at Liverpool remains in doubt, and the club’s transfer decisions have left him contemplating his next steps. Whether Liverpool will reconsider their stance on his potential departure remains to be seen, but the young goalkeeper is clearly eager to seize opportunities that align with his ambitions of regular first-team football.
